Human life is random, short and essentially pointless. Once all we had to do was survive, and after figuring out that the best way to do this was to be an utter bastard to other life forms, we moved on to the bigger questions, like 'Why am I here?' 'Why are you here?' And 'How do I get one over on you?' The more we learn the more we realise how little we know. What is humanity's gain in discovering the minutiae? It is an admirable thing to want to leave the world a better place than you found it, but realistically the best thing for the planet would be no humans, so that puts us in a bit of a bind.
