Liverpool Uni Fencing Club - officially The Best in the World, ever!
Here I am, back in sunny scouseland, still smiling from the Athletic Union dinner last night. I got ready at Mario's and was ready to throw his iron out of the window as it is rubbish! It kept hissing and spitting all over my dress and wasn't getting the creases out. I managed to sort it in the end though, before grabbing a really quick shower. My hair was a pain in the bum, so I resorted to putting it in a bun and sticking those little rose spiral hair accessory thingies all around it. It looked nice enough. Mario and Kev walked me over to Susan's, looking very smart in their tuxedos before heading off via a cashpoint to the Adelphi. The girls got a taxi down and we arrived way before M and K, meeting the rest of the guys in the anteroom. They turned up eventually, as did Mike, Del and Andrea, and we queued to have a group photo taken:

My hair looks a bit scraggy on that, but it was slightly better than the other one he took. The dinner itself was ok, nothing special. The carrot and coriander soup tasted more of coriander than carrot, and the sauce with my vegetable wellington was slightly coagulated, but it tasted quite nice. I was a little miffed that it was the same main as last year though. Dessert was unremarkable. I ate the strawberry garnish and the chocolate mousse topping but left the rest. It seemed suspiciously gelatinous to me...
After dinner came the awards. It was nice to find out that one of our epeeists, a modern pentathlete, represented the UK in a European Championship and hence earned himself a Royal Blues award. Most of the ladies' team won their Full Colours, and I stupidly left mine on our table. I need to ring the hotel and find out if anyone handed it in. Then came the club awards. We had nominated ourselves for all four categories: Most Improved Team (ladies' team for going from fourth to second in the league and making it to the Trohpy finals)), Most Improved Club, Best Team (men's team, after being undefeated and getting into the Premiership) and Best Club. The first three awards went to Netball, Volleyball and Golf (not in that order) so we all sat there wondering if Ultimate Frisbee, our unofficial arch-nemeses, would win best club. They always give a mini-biography before announcing the winner, so when the AU president said '...both teams went undefeated in their leagues...' we thought that was it, another year with no recognition. But then I heard '... Ladies' captain... Glasgow... two Best Beginner trophies at the Merseyside Open...' - I couldn't believe it! We couldn't believe it. He announced 'fencing' and both of our tables erupted in screams and whoops of joy - finally, after so much hard work and jeering from the other clubs, we had shown them what a bunch of newbies can become. Liverpool University Fencing Club is officially the best club in the whole of the AU. What made it even better was after the presentation, the AU president said to Susan on the side that if the rules didn't limit each team to only one trophy, we would have taken all four - they'd had to give it to the second best contender in each case. That just capped it. Alex splashed out on two bottles of champagne and we drank it from the cup.
Susan had to clean it up this morning but it was worth it to carry it around for the whole evening. We had a drink or two more and then headed out to the dancefloor. The music was a bit pants but we were all on such a high that it didn't matter. The evening ended at about one in the morning and we all went to bed some very happy fencers.
