Bienvenidos!

Liverpool University Fencing Club rocks at the BUSA individuals!

I've had such a lazy day today and feel quite guilty about it as Mario had to get up and go to work.

A whole bunch of us got back from the BUSA individuals last night. I didn't know the trains were messed up so it took us SIX FLIPPIN HOURS to get back, on a coach that was either too hot or too cold and smelled of vomit for half the journey. I'm so so glad we left when we did. The comp was fun though - we had way more entries than last year, and people in all six weapons. I went to Notts with Kev, Tanya and Mario on Thursday night for women's sabre and men's epee on the Friday. The hall was freezing when we got there so I spent a lot of the day in the upstairs bit near the canteen. Mario did quite well, I can't remember where he finished up but he was robbed of a victory in his last DE by a cheating GBR son of a bitch. I'm still angry about that. RUPERT PAINES IS AN ARROGANT CHEATING BASTARD! Bah. Anyway. Rooban surprised everybody by kicking ass and ending up something like 20th after pools. Again, I'm not sure exactly where he finished as the results haven't been posted yet. Tanya did well for her first competition, finishing something like 24th.

On Saturday it was men's foil and women's epee. It was also Mario's birthday so I gave him his presents at about half six in the morning before we got up to get ready to go. We had a full quota for men's foil, and everyone did well initially. Mario had given Gavin his place, and it was fully justified as Gavin kicked ass in the pools and ended up tied at 36th place with Kev after pools. Rooban had a bad day and ended up losing out in his first DE to a guy he couldn't figure out. I think everyone else got through their first elimination, including Ben and Hassan, who were up against higher seeded fencers than themselves. In the women's epee, Sarah had a smashing day, winning 5 of her 6 pool bouts and eventually finishing 6th overall. The same couldn't be said about me - I ended up with three wins, two losses (I think) with a fair seeding. I won my first DE but lost out in my second in a very close match, losing 15-14 to the girl who eventually came 5th.

We got back from the uni fairly early, popped in to see a couple of people in the way home then Mario and I got ready to go out. My hair is kind of annoying right now. It's far too thin to hold any kind of up do without the use of copious amounts of grips and spray. When I took my hair down after we got back it almost stayed put... We got to the restaurant - Caf Rouge - about 10 minutes late, but never mind. The meal was good; I've not been to a french restaurant before so it made a nice change. We both had breaded Camembert with red berry sauce to start, then I had some chicken, leek and mushroom concoction with herby mash (not had mashed potato for ages!) and Mario had one of the specials from the board, which looked suspiciously like a christmas dinner... He finished with the chocolate fondant, which was lovely, and I had crepes suzette. Next time I'm not going to pour the liqueur over the whole thing. It didn't really need it. After dinner we went to meet up with Joe and the rest of the fencers, but the night ended up with too much walking and not enough socialising. My feet were burning by the time we got home and I managed to lose one of the nubs from my heel, so I need to get that fixed.

Sunday had far too early a start for me. We managed to get to sign-in just as they were about to close, which was lucky. Susan and I were entering women's foil, whilst Mario, Henry, Kev and Rory did men's sabre. Kev surprised everyone by coming second in his pool and twenty-somethingth overall - above the rest of the LUFC men. Mario wasn't fencing to win but just to enjoy it; however he did win two of his pool bouts, getting sliced across the knuckles in the process. Susan had a good day, drawing even in the pools and ending up somewhere around 25th. I only won one bout, but my last was very close and I lost because my attack just fell short and the other girl managed to jab me before I renewed. I redeemed myself in the DEs by winning my first, but unfortunately lost in a decent fight in my second. It really annoys me when people are ungracious when they win - the least they could do is look you in the eye and acknowledge a good fight. Susan also won her first DE but lost out in her second. Henry and Kev got through their first DEs but I'm not really sure what heppened after that. Kev still ended up ranked higher than the rest of the LUFC sabreurs, with Mario coming lowest. Then came that god-awful ride home. We went back to Tanya's when we got back to Liverpool so Mario could use the computer, and she cooked macaroni cheese, which was gratefully received. All things considered, it was a good weekend. I do wish I'd done a bit better though. But then again, I have two more years to try and improve before I stop being eligible.

I really can't wait for the christmas holidays. I need the break...
